In 1968, the devastating assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. took place at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Today, you can travel to that exact spot and pay your respects at the National Civil Rights Museum, which follows the trials and triumphs of the American Civil Rights movement all the way back to the 1600's. During years of segregation, the Lorraine hotel was host to a variety of African American celebrities. Some of its guests included Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Ray Charles. Along with many notable locals, they helped shape Memphis into the musical mecca that it is today.
