The Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) is a Canadian airport authority charged with operating Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Transport Canada. The HIAA was established in November 1995 before changes in Canadian airports' operation by the federal government. Through its Department of Transportation, the federal government had owned and operated the airport since its construction in 1960. Yet, in the 1990s, it examined ways to reduce the payroll and scope of Transport Canada activities. Following the Transportation Canada Act changes in 1995, Transport Canada began to cede the operation of seaports and airports to non-profit authorities. On February 1, 2000, the HIAA took over Halifax Stanfield International Airport's management from Transport Canada. Transport Canada continues to own the airport and collects rent from the HIAA, in addition to setting the rules governing airport operations.
