Obtaining rental car insurance coverage provides peace-of-mind, but it can also be a cost-saving measure should you meet with misfortune while driving in Italy. When renting a car in Italy, we strongly encourage drivers to obtain supplemental Italy car rental insurance coverage. This can limit the deductible you owe should you have an accident, or have your rental car burglarized while touring Italy. Italy’s car rental insurance requirements are quite strict. If you are renting a car in Italy CDW insurance (Collision Damage Waiver) and Theft Protection coverage (TP) are required by law. To make booking your rental simpler, Auto Europe includes these insurances in the price of all of our Italian car rental options. We also include fire insurance coverage and third-party liability insurance, which limits your financial risk should your rental car be involved in an accident while driving in Italy.
You should note that while credit cards with car rental insurance coverage may provide supplemental coverage to travelers renting a car elsewhere in Europe, in Italy very few credit cards provide rental car insurance coverage. We recommend contacting your credit card company directly, and also speaking with an Auto Europe representative (1-888-223-5555, toll-free, 24/7) to ensure that you are covered sufficiently.

Like many travel purchases, you can save significantly on supplemental Italy car rental insurance coverage options when you book in advance at Auto Europe. Local offerings available at the pick-up counter are significantly more expensive. Auto Europe also offers an attractive zero-excess rental car insurance option in Italy, which can reduce your out-of-pocket deductible to nothing should you have an accident while driving your rental car in Italy, or if your rental vehicle happens to be stolen.
Alternately, consider refundable deductible rental car insurance, if available for your rental. This option from Auto Europe allows you to reduce your risk to zero, refunding the full deductible amount you paid, as long as you provide documentation of the accident and your rental.
If you are traveling with valuables, consider adding Personal Effects Protection coverage, which reduces your risk when leaving expensive or irreplaceable items inside your car when you’re not in it. This is a good idea for most travelers who plan to park their car with luggage inside, as it protects you in the case of a burglary to your rental car in Italy. Typically the cost of Personal Effects Protection is quite low ($9 CAD or less per day). Personal Accident Coverage can also be purchased locally at the rental car pick-up desk, and you can expect to pay approximately $10 CAD per day for this supplemental coverage while driving a rental car in Italy.
