To rent a vehicle in the Netherlands through Auto Europe you need to be at least 19 years old, however in some cases a minimum age of 23 may apply. You are also required to have your driver’s license for a minimum of 1year with most of the suppliers that we work with, but some may require you to have your license for 2 or 3 years in order to rent certain vehicle categories. If you happen to be a young driver renting a car under the age of 25, you may be required by the rental supplier to pay an additional young driver surcharge ranging from $12 CAD up to $25 CAD per day. Please be aware that certain suppliers in the Netherlands may apply a maximum rental age of 75 years. Children who are under the age of 18 or smaller then 1.35 meters tall are prohibited from traveling in the front seat and are required to wear a seat belt at all times. Any child under the age of 3 years is required to use a car seat that is suitable for their size and secured in the back seat of the vehicle. The use of a mobile phone while driving in the Netherlands is illegal, those who are caught doing so are likely to be subject to fines exceeding €136 which is payable on the spot.
In the Netherlands the following speed limits apply: city 30 to 50 km/h, major roads 80-100 km/h and 100-120 km/h on the highways. Please pay attention to speed limit signs in the area you are traveling.
Rules of the Road
In the Netherlands vehicles must travel on the right and must give way to moving trams. Horns are only to be used to warn others of extreme dangers and it is recommended to use headlights at all times when traveling in the Netherlands.
Gas & Diesel
When traveling in the Netherlands please take note that gas stations located in rural areas are usually only open from 8am until 8 or 9pm, but stations in the larger cities are generally open 24 hours.
Most of the roadways throughout the Netherlands are toll free. The only places where you might be required to pay a toll is for the use of some bridges and tunnels.
In the Netherlands in order to park in marked blue zone areas you are required to obtain a parking disc to place on the dashboard of the vehicle. Discs are available for purchase at tobacco shops, police stations and tourist offices.
Insurance requirements for vehicle rentals often change from country to country and because of this is why Auto Europe highly recommends learning as much as possible about what insurances are required in the Netherlands before you travel. In the Netherlands car rentals are required to have fire insurance and third party liability insurance coverage. Here at Auto Europe we include both forms of insurance on all basic rental rates in the Netherlands. Fire insurance provides an unlimited amount of coverage in the event the rental vehicle is damage because of a fire. Third party liability provides $2,000,000 CAD up to $6,000,000 CAD worth of coverage to people and property outside the rental vehicle that may be damaged or injured because of the rental vehicle.
In the Netherlands collision damage waiver and theft protection are option on car rentals. Auto Europe gives you the option to purchase these insurances ahead of time at an advance purchase discount by offering them on all inclusive rental rates in the Netherlands. CDW is available locally for approximately $24 to $40 CAD per day depending on what category you are renting. Theft is also offered locally and can cost about $8 to $35 CAD per day and can usually only be purchased in conjunction with CDW. CDW and theft will almost always have a deductible that you are responsible for in the event anything happens to the rental vehicle, in the Netherlands the amount of the deductible can range from $850 up to $2,100 CAD. Super CDW is an optional insurance that is usually offered locally to help reduce the amount of the deductible. The cost of super CDW in the Netherlands can range from $11 CAD per day up to $20 CAD per day and is available with select suppliers only. Personal accident insurance (PAI) is another optional form of insurance that may be offered by the rental company locally. PAI provides death and disability coverage to the driver and passengers of the rental vehicle and costs about $8 to $12 CAD per day. In the event you decide to decline the CDW and theft in order to take advantage of coverage provided by your credit card Auto Europe strongly recommends contacting the card issuer to learn the details of your coverage.
Auto Europe would like to make sure that you are fully aware of any restrictions that may apply to your car rental. If you are intending to rent a luxury vehicle, large van or automatic rental car, there may be travel restrictions due to insurance regulations on those particular categories. Due to our excellent relationship with our car rental suppliers has allowed for us to create a special program that will allow travel into Eastern European countries. Additional surcharges may apply for rentals being taken into Eastern Europe and not all vehicle categories may be permitted. Rentals originating in the Netherlands are prohibited from traveling into the following countries without advanced approval from Auto Europe: Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria etc) Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey and the Ukraine.
