The speed limits in Portugal are: city 50 km/h, open roads 90 km/h and 120 km/h on the highway. Speed limits are heavily enforced and severe penalties can result to those who fail to oblige.
Rules of the Road
Vehicles in Portugal are required to travel on the right hand side of the road. When entering a roundabout the vehicles that are already in the roundabout have the right of way.
Gas & Diesel
Many Portuguese gas stations are open 24 hours and accept many international credit cards. Regular unleaded gas costs about $7.43 CAD per gallon with diesel costing about $5.87 CAD per gallon.
Many highways in Portugal will require you to pay a toll, many of which are determined by the vehicle category and the distance you traveled.
In Portugal vehicles are required to park on the right side of the street and in the direction that traffic is traveling. Do not park within 18 meters of an intersection, 15 meters from a bus stop or 3 meters from a tram stop as is restricted in Portugal

Fire and third party liability insurance are included on all rentals commencing in Portugal booked through Auto Europe, as they are required. Third party liability provides insurance coverage to people and property outside of the rental vehicle that may be damaged or injured by the rental vehicle. Third party liability coverage can range from 50 million euros up to an unlimited amount depending on the car rental supplier. Fire insurance provides coverage to the rental vehicle in the event is damaged due to a fire and most of the supplies that we work with will cover an unlimited amount.
Collision damage waiver and theft protection are option on car rentals taking place in Portugal. Auto Europe gives you the option to purchase these insurances ahead of time at an advance purchase discount by offering them on all inclusive rental rates in Portugal. CDW and theft will almost always have a deductible that you are responsible for in the event anything happens to the rental vehicle. in Deductible amounts in Portugal can range from $1,390 up to $4,000 CAD. Super CDW is an optional insurance that is usually offered locally to help reduce the amount of the deductible; it can cost about $16 CAD per day up to $35 CAD per day and is available with select suppliers only. Personal accident insurance (PAI) is another optional insurance that is available locally, which will provide death and disability coverage to the driver and passengers of the rental vehicle. PAI costs approximately $10 CAD per day up to $12 CAD per day depending on the rental supplier. Optional insurances are provided through certain supplies only and prices can change without notice at anytime. If you elect to decline CDW and theft to take advantage of insurance coverage through your credit card please check with the card issuer to learn the specifics of your coverage.

International one-way car rentals are available at an additional fee. Domestic one-way rentals are offered with most being free of charge. Minimum rental lengths may apply and not all categories are permitted.
