Things to Expect When Renting a Car in Europe

Renting a car while traveling in Europe is one of the best ways to explore any destination. It is important to remember that the rental process you experience while traveling abroad may differ slightly from the process you are used to in Canada. You can never be too careful when borrowing a piece of equipment that does not belong to you, so make sure you ask questions and thoroughly check your rental before driving off the lot. Make sure all scratches, dents and other pre-existing damage is documented before you sign your rental agreement. Auto Europe is always available to answer questions before, during and after your trip!

What Questions to Ask at the Rental Counter

Knowing your company's fuel return policy and type of fuel your rental car uses are both essential questions to ask. The answers to these questions are noted on your Auto Europe travel voucher but it is always best to double check. Most rental car suppliers have two different refueling options, full-to-full (your rental comes with a full tank and is to be returned with a full tank) or a prepaid option (your rental comes with a full tank and is returned as empty as possible). Be sure to inquire about exactly what time your rental needs to be back at the end of your trip. Most rental companies in Europe have very strict return policies and no grace periods are usually given, so if you're late for your specified drop off time, you could be charged for an extra full day at the supplier's local rate.

    Deposits

Similar to rental companies in Canada, most rental companies in Europe also hold deposits for rental cars. These deposits are usually equal to the amount of your deductible, plus the cost of fuel and value added taxes are also added as collateral in the event of an accident. Be sure to bring a major credit card with you, as most debit cards are usually not accepted due to certain limitations they present. Your deposit will be released when your vehicle is returned and depending on your bank, may take several days to be added back to your account.

There are several things to keep in mind when you are renting a vehicle. When you arrive at the rental location, be sure to ask if the vehicle uses diesel fuel or regular fuel. Also be sure to note if the car should be returned with a full or empty tank of fuel. If you return it with a full tank of fuel, make sure to save all receipts. Nearly all cars have unlimited mileage included with the rental however some vehicles may have mileage restrictions. Make sure you inquire about this if you are uncertain. Another thing to be aware of is when the rental is due to be returned. Generally, there are no grace periods for returning the vehicle. If the car rental is checked in at a later time then checked out, the car rental supplier will charge an additional day to the rental at their local rate. Always remember to ask someone if you have any questions regarding your rental. Auto Europe is here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call us with questions at 1-888.223.5555
