    Austria Car Rental: Driving Information

    General Information
    The magnificent cities of Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna are all within your reach with a car rental in Austria booked through Auto Europe. Auto Europe wants to ensure that you have the best possible experience while in Austria with your car rental, therefore below you will find some important information pertaining to driving and renting in Europe.

    Restricted Countries
    Rental Car Restrictions in AustriaIn order to rent a vehicle in Austria you are required to be a minimum of 19 years old and have had your drivers’ license for at least 1 year. If you happen to be 19-24 years old some rental suppliers may require you to pay a young driver surcharge of $7-$24 CAD per day. If from a non-European country your driver’s license MUST be accompanied by an International Driver's Permit. The use of a mobile phone while driving in Austria is illegal and those who fail to oblige can be fined, unless the phone is equipped with a hands free device. All children under the age of 12 years must sit in the back seat of the vehicle in a child seat that is proper to their size.

    Speed Limits
    The following speed limits apply in Austria: city 50 km/h, major roads 100 km/h and highways 130 km/h.

    Rules of the Road
    In Austria traffic is required to travel on the right side of the road, headlight must be turned on at all times and trams traveling on the left have priority. The use of a horn in most cities in Austria is prohibited unless otherwise specified.

    Gas & Diesel
    A gallon of regular unleaded gas in Austria costs about $5.96 CAD, with diesel costing a little bit less at about $5.56 CAD per gallon. Most Austrian gas stations are open between the hours of 8am to 8pm.

    In Austria you will be required to have a toll sticker to drive on the following motorways: A10, A9, A13 and the S16. Vehicles rented in Austria through Auto Europe will come with the appropriate toll stickers required.

    Many cities practice a parking disc system where you are required to purchase a time disc to display on the dashboard of the vehicle. Discs can be purchased at disc machines, banks and shops in the area.

    Austria Car Rental Insurance Information

    General Information
    Insurance is extremely important when renting a vehicle and requirements often change from country to country. When renting a vehicle in Austria with Auto Europe your rental rate will automatically include all necessary insurances. Below we have gone into detail what insurance is required to be on your vehicle rental and what other options are available to your through Auto Europe and the local suppliers.

    If beginning your rental in Austria the insurance guidelines of Austria will be in effect for the entire duration of the rental even in the event it is returned to a different country. Specific insurance information can be found in the terms and conditions area of your rental voucher.

    Required Coverage
    Fire and third party liability insurance are included on all rentals commencing in Austria booked through Auto Europe, as they are required. Third party liability provides insurance coverage to people and property outside of the rental vehicle that may be damaged or inured by the rental vehicle. Third party liability coverage can range from $5,750,000 CAD up to $11,300,000 CAD depending on the car rental supplier. Fire insurance provides coverage to the rental vehicle in the event is damaged due to a fire and most of the supplies that we work with will cover an unlimited amount.

    Optional Coverage
    In Austria there are a few optional insurances that are offered including collision damage waiver (CDW), theft protection, super CDW and personal accident insurance. Collision damage waiver and theft are included in all inclusive rental rates in Austria at an advanced purchase discount. If CDW is purchased locally it can cost anywhere from $39 CAD per day up to $65 CAD per day depending on the rental supplier and car category. Theft is also available locally and costs between $8 and $55 CAD per day. When CDW and theft protection are purchased the supplier will have a deductible that you are responsible for in the event anything happens to the vehicle, which can range from $ 670 CAD up to $1,975 CAD. Super CDW is available locally for about $18-$22 CAD per day, which will help reduce the amount of the deductible you are responsible for. Personal accident insurance (PAI) is another insurance that is available locally to provide death and disability coverage to the driver and passengers of the rental vehicle and it costs about $10-$16 CAD per day. Please be aware that optional insurances are available with select car suppliers only and prices and participation are subject to change without notice. You may elect to decline CDW and Theft insurance in order to take advantage of coverage offered to you by your credit card. Please contact the card issuer to learn the specifics of your coverage.

    Rental Restrictions

    General Information
    With Auto Europe most vehicles rented in Austria have the ability to travel throughout Western Europe without any restrictions. Some specific vehicle categories including luxury vehicles, vans and automatics may have travel restrictions due to insurance regulations. Here at Auto Europe we have worked hard to build strong relationships with all of our suppliers that has allowed for the creation of a special rental program, which will allow certain vehicles to travel into Eastern Europe. Additional surcharges may apply to rentals being taken into Eastern Europe. Some suppliers may also restrict some vehicles from traveling into Italy, if you have plans to travel into Italy please advise Auto Europe at time of booking to make sure your rental is permitted to travel there. At this time we would like to ask for you to take a moment and make sure the vehicle you intend to rent will be suitable for your travel needs.

    Rentals originating in Austria are prohibited from traveling into the following countries without advanced approval from Auto Europe: Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria etc) Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey and the Ukraine.

    One-Way Rentals
    International one-way rentals are available for an additional fee. Domestic one-way rentals are available and are generally free of charge. Not all vehicles are permitted and minimum rentals lengths may apply.
