With a car rental in Sweden booked through Auto Europe, travelers have the freedom to explore this beautiful country however you see fit! Before you embark on your driving excursion please take a moment to read over the information below, as it is important to driving and renting a vehicle in Sweden.
In Sweden you must be at least 18 years old and have had your license for at minimum of 1 year in order to rent a car through Auto Europe. When renting a vehicle under the age of 25, drivers may be required by the local car supplier to pay an additional young driver surcharge of $18 to $23 CAD per day. If you are traveling with a child who is under the age of 7 years old must be secured in a child car seat or booster (whichever is more suitable for their size) and sitting in the back seat of the car. All other vehicle occupants over the age of 7 year are required to wear a seatbelt at all times.
The following speed limits apply in Sweden unless otherwise marked by speed limit signs: city 50 km/h, congested city areas 30 km/h, open roads 70 km/h and on Swedish highways 90-110 km/h.
Rules of the Road
In Sweden you are required to drive on the right hand side of the road and have your headlights on at all times. Use caution when traveling in country areas at night as moose, deer and other game animals frequently cross roads and highways at night.
Gas & Diesel
Gas stations in Sweden are usually open at 7am and close between 7 and 10pm. Diesel and unleaded gas options are available throughout Sweden and a majority of stations accept credit cards.
In Sweden you will be charged for driving in central Stockholm between the hours of 6:30am and 6:30pm. The toll ranges from $1.50 to $3 CAD each time you enter central Stockholm with a maximum charge of about $12 CAD per day.
In Sweden parking is permitted on the right hand side of the road in the direction of flowing traffic unless noted otherwise. Parking is generally regulated by parking meters with a 1 or 2-hour limit.
All rentals require some level of car rental insurance but requirements often change from country to country. When renting a vehicle in Sweden with Auto Europe your rental rate will automatically include all necessary insurances required by the country. Below we have gone into detail what insurance is required to be on your vehicle rental and what other options are available to your through Auto Europe and the local suppliers.
When renting a car in Sweden the insurance guidelines of Sweden will be in effect for the entire duration of the rental. Specific insurance information can be found in the terms and conditions area of your rental voucher.
When renting a vehicle in Sweden it is required to have fire and third party liability insurances. Auto Europe is happy to inform you that all basic rental rates include these forms of insurance. Fire insurance provides an unlimited amount of coverage to the rental vehicle in the event it is damage because of a fire. Third party liability insurance generally covers an unlimited amount of coverage to people and property outside of the rental car that may be damaged or injured because of the rental vehicle.
There are a few optional insurances available for rentals commencing in Sweden including collision damage waiver (CDW), theft protection, personal accident insurance (PAI) and super CDW. Auto Europe’s inclusive rental rates in Sweden will include CDW and theft protection at an excellent advanced purchase discount. CDW and theft protection are available locally at the rental counter with some suppliers. If you decide to decline CDW and theft with Auto Europe and the local rental supplier in order to take advantage of coverage provided by your credit card please contact the card issuer to learn about your coverage and if they cover rentals taking place in Sweden. When purchased locally the cost of CDW ranges from $14 to $25 CAD per day with theft costing about $5 to $10 CAD per day both insurances are dependant on the vehicle category you are renting. Most of the suppliers that we work with will have a deductible that you are responsible in the event something happens to the rental vehicle, in Sweden deductibles can range from $200 CAD up to $800 CAD. Many suppliers offer a supplementary insurance locally called super CDW that will help, reduce the amount of the deductible; the cost for super CDW can range from $5 to $10 CAD per day. Personal accident insurance is available locally for about $4 to $11 CAD per day and will provide death and disability coverage to the driver and passengers of the rental vehicle. Please be aware that optional insurances may be available with certain car suppliers only and the prices noted above are approximate and can change without notice at anytime.

International one-way car rentals are available from Sweden and will always incur an additional fee. Domestic one-ways are also offered for an additional fee. Minimum rental lengths may apply and not all vehicles are allowed.
