Passion Play One of the most celebrated and beloved religious events in Spain, occurs each year in March, amidst the sleepy town of Esparraguera. Since medieval times, over 2000 spectators gather to witness the 'passion of Christ' acted out in 48 amazing scenes. This well known, revered event, is one you cannot afford to miss!
Festival of the May Crosses For the cultural experience of a lifetime, head to Granada for the Festival of the May Crosses. Local inhabitants decorate their balconies and plazas with stunning floral arrangements that serve as the focal point for the dancing, singing and eating that follow!
Fried Fish Day The annual Dia del Pescaito festival takes place on La Carihuela Beach, in the sunny town of Torremolinos. On this special day you will find fresh fish, fried anchovies, paella, and squid rings, all free for the taking!
San Fermin Festival - Running of the Bulls Broadcast by two national television channels, the Pamplona Bull Run is an exhilarating experience for anyone brave enough to try! Although the process only lasts approximately four minutes, this event is the highlight for many visitors. For those not interested in participating, the event also makes for a superb spectator sport!
La Tomatina Food fight! La Tomatina is a crazy festival held in the Valencia region where tens of thousand of participants come from around world to fight in a battle where the only weapon is tomatoes! Starting with the unusual tradition of climbing a greased pole to claim the ham placed at the top, trucks haul in the tomatoes specially grown for this festival to the center of town. More than one hundred metric tons of over ripe tomatoes are thrown into the streets. After exactly one hour, the fighting ends and no more tomatoes can be thrown. Fire trucks then spray down the streets, leaving them cleaner than before due to acidic content of the tomatoes!
Sheepdog Contest The local breed of sheepdog, the gos d'atura, is showcased in this event as a means to test their sheep herding abilities. Participating pups only have approximately 6 minutes to stop on command and lead the sheep to their shepherd, before guiding them to their pen.
All Saints Day As the calendar approaches Tosantos, Cadiz hosts a joyous festival with fabulous dancing, delicious food and drink, and delightfully animated magic shows. Be there to witness the locals of Cadiz dress up like rabbits, suckle pigs in the market, and make dolls out of fruit, in honor of their cultural traditions.
