Since Long Beach is a major port city along the California coast, one should spend time in Queensway Bay. There you can visit the iconic ocean liner turned hotel-on-the-water, the Queen Mary. You can also visit the Aquarium of the Pacific. It's one of the largest aquariums in the entire United States. It's under 10 minutes away by car, and is also located near Shoreline Aquatic Park. Plus, from in this area, you'll have optimal views of the Los Angeles River.
Another great day trip is only 30 miles away in Santa Monica. You can drive through famous Los Angeles neighborhoods along I-405 North, and be in Santa Monica in less than an hour. There you can spend time around the historical and world famous Santa Monica pier.
