In 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, accompanied by a Shoshone woman named Sacagawea, began the first expedition to the Pacific coast. On April 27, 1805, the party arrived in what is now the state of Montana. William Clark passed through Montana again in 1806, when he carved his name into the sandstone of what he called Pompey's Pillar. The butte, named for Sacagawea's son, still bares Clark's name, and is the only remaining evidence of the expedition. Today, people come from all over the world to get a look at Pompey's Pillar and its famous signature. Another popular Montana attraction is the Custer Battlefield Museum, where you will find historic photographs and Indian artifacts from the Battle of Little Big Horn. With a rental car, you will be able to join locals and other visitors in Garryowen, where a reenactment of this famous battle is held every summer. A rental car will also make sure you are able to take a day trip to America's most beloved National Park, Yellowstone!
