Vincent van Gogh sojourned to Arles for two years in 1888 to seek refuge due to illness. During his stay, the enchanted landscapes and amber lit city was his muse for the production of 300 paintings. Many of the cafes painted in his post-impressionist work can still be found in downtown Arles. This quaint city is also a particularly curious place because it houses Roman ruins that were built in the second and third century B.C. The Roman arena is a magnificent gem in the heart of Arles, which is open to visitors to appreciate. For those that want to take advantage of outdoor activities, Saintes Maries de la Mer national park is but a short drive south for great hiking and swimming.
